Our Outreach Programs

🐾 The Pet Cottage / Protecting K9 Heroes

Protecting K9 Heroes (also known as “The Pet Cottage”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to safeguarding our canine protectors by providing ballistic vests, emergency medical kits, and life-saving gear for working dogs. Protecting K9 Heroes Their mission supports law enforcement and community K9 units across the country, ensuring those who protect us receive protection in return.

🏡 Helping Senior Dogs Find Forever Homes

Every dog deserves a second chance. We provide funding for Pet Cottage and support for the placement of older dogs into loving homes, giving them comfort, care, and companionship in their golden years.

🎓 Investing in Canine Education & Research

As part of our commitment to the future of dogs everywhere, we contribute to continuing education at The AKC and Florida State University, as well as health studies that advance canine care. These efforts improve understanding of dog wellness, training, and behavior—ultimately benefiting families and communities.

🐕 Training Classes for Lasting Bonds

To help families enjoy a lifetime with their pets, we offer obedience classes and AKC STAR Puppy training. By teaching dogs good manners and social skills, we reduce the risk of surrender and ensure more dogs remain in their forever homes.

We also know that dogs with basic manners and skills tend to stay with their families and are less apt to lose their homes and end up in animal shelters.  To that end, we have an active training program for Basic Obedience and beyond with our Transitional Obedience Classes.  These classes are open to the public.  We begin with STAR Puppy. The program's acronym, S.T.A.R., stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility.

🐕 Preparation to become Therapy Dogs

Our therapy dog teams participate in numerous programs geared to provide comfort, support and humane education to those that tey visit. From schools and medical facilities to senior centers and community events, these special teams bring comfort, connection, and joy to those they visit.  With increasing requests from healthcare and educational organizations, our program helps prepare dedicated teams to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. For handlers interested in this rewarding volunteer work, strong and reliable obedience skills are essential in evaluating a dog’s potential for therapy service.

🐕Puppy Raisers: Preparing Dogs to be Future Service Dogs

A service dog is a specially trained dog that helps a person with a disability perform specific tasks related to that disability. These dogs are not pets—they are working animals with legal protections (for example, under the Americans with Disabilities Act in the U.S.).

Why Our Community Outreach Matters

  • Stronger K9 safety for working dogs and officers

  • Happier, healthier family dogs who stay in forever homes

  • Increased awareness through education and research

  • A compassionate community united by the love of dogs

How You Can Help

There has recently been a request for families willing to take on service dogs in training.  If you are interested please contact Genesis Assistance Dogs.

They say "We need people to be puppy raisers. Puppy Raisers take the Service Dogs In Training into their homes to continue to advance the pups toward their ultimate goal of being an Assistance Dog. Puppy raising includes reinforcing known commands, teaching and training new commands and manners, grooming, taking the dog to work and out in public, taking the dog to Genesis events, hugging and playing with the dog!  We welcome you and your family to come and learn how to train a future Genesis Assistance Dog.  No experience is necessary; we will show you how to work with our assistance dogs in Florida."
